Senegal president arrives in Accra for global reparations summit
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has arrived in Accra to take part in the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice, a three-day international summit hosted by Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama running from June 17 to 19. Faye is among the keynote speakers at the conference, which brings together heads of state, foreign ministers, jurists and civil rights advocates from more than 80 countries. The summit follows the United Nations General Assembly's adoption in March 2026 of Resolution A/RES/80/250, the first resolution in the UN's 80-year history dedicated exclusively to the transatlantic slave trade, passed by 123 votes. Mahama serves as the African Union's official Champion on Reparations, positioning Accra as the structural headquarters for the continent's reparations advocacy. The conference opens with technical consultations at Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, continues with a high-level summit on June 18 at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, and closes on June 19 with a commemorative programme at Christiansborg Castle in Osu, the 17th century fortress that served as a hub of the transatlantic slave trade. French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to deliver a virtual address to the conference.
