Iran deal unravels as US and Iran cancel Friday Switzerland talks over Israeli attacks in Lebanon
The landmark US-Iran peace talks scheduled for today at the Swiss mountain resort of Burgenstock have collapsed, with the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirming they will not go ahead as planned. The cancellation came from both sides simultaneously — Iran cancelled its delegation's flight, citing continued Israeli attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, while the White House announced US Vice President JD Vance would not be departing for Switzerland, blaming logistical issues. Switzerland said it remains ready to facilitate the talks and that preparatory work at Burgenstock is continuing. The collapse is a serious blow to a deal that was signed only days ago on June 11. Iran had made ending Israeli operations in Lebanon a central condition of any lasting agreement, and continued Israeli strikes beyond ten kilometres inside Lebanese territory were described by Iran-linked sources as a clear violation of the memorandum of understanding. The 60-day clock on nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, triggered by the signing of the memorandum, is now ticking with no new date confirmed for technical talks. A White House spokesperson said the US looks forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible.
