Police foiled a coordinated bank robbery attempt in Labone, Accra, on Thursday morning, killing two armed suspects in a shootout and arresting a third. The operation was launched at approximately 10:45 a.m. after intelligence revealed that a syndicate was positioning itself to target branches of GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank in the area.

Upon arriving at the location, police teams spotted members of the gang parked in two vehicles near the targeted banks. When officers moved in, one vehicle sped away. Police gave chase and arrested suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi, although another occupant managed to flee on foot. The occupants of the second vehicle opened fire on the police while attempting to break through the cordon, triggering a gun battle that resulted in two robbers being fatally wounded.

Police recovered two vehicles from the scene: a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS 1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17. Officers also seized a blow pistol. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the morgue for identification and autopsy.

Suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi remains in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations to track down the remaining accomplice. The Police Service commended the response team for their swift action and thanked the public for providing vital intelligence.
