Over 10,000 Burkinabe Refugees Flee to Ghana Amid Escalating Sahel Crisis More than 10,000 Burkinabe asylum seekers have crossed into northern Ghana to escape deteriorating security conditions and climate-related shocks in the Sahel region. The figures were disclosed by World Vision Ghana during a high-level stakeholder engagement in Bolgatanga held to mark World Refugee Day 2026. The humanitarian organization revealed that the displaced populations are actively fleeing armed conflict and extremist violence across the border. The refugees are primarily being accommodated across several northern border communities, including Tarikom, Zini, Fielmo, Bansi, and Issakatinga. ### The Humanitarian Impact on Children Humanitarian officials emphasized that children represent the most vulnerable demographic in this displacement crisis, frequently enduring disrupted education, psychosocial trauma, and heightened risks of exploitation. To stabilize living conditions, World Vision Ghana—in coordination with the Ghana Refugee Board and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)—has deployed mechanized water systems and critical sanitation infrastructure at the Tarikom and Zini refugee camps to supply safe drinking water to thousands of displaced individuals daily. While local communities have been commended for accommodating the influx, aid agencies are calling on international donors and regional governments to transition from temporary emergency relief toward sustainable, long-term security and economic integration programs.
