The jersey featured an illustration of the Battle of Vertieres in 1803 — the battle that secured Haiti's independence — with the national flag embedded on the front. FIFA's equipment regulations prohibit political, religious or personal messages or slogans on kits. Kit manufacturer Saeta said the design was not intended as a political statement but as a tribute to the men and women who contribute every day to Haiti's future. Haiti open their first World Cup campaign in 52 years against Scotland on Saturday June 13, before facing Brazil and Morocco in Group C.
