Teen shot and five school buses torched as New York Knicks championship celebrations turn violent in Times Square Jubilant celebrations for the New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years descended into chaos overnight in Times Square after a 17-year-old boy was shot in the foot and five school buses were destroyed or set on fire. The buses had been transporting fans from Manhattan to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for World Cup matches. Rioters smashed windshields, ripped off bus hoods and ignited one bus on 42nd Street near the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Police in riot gear moved in with batons and zip ties to disperse the crowd. A total of 63 people were arrested on charges including assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. Ten NYPD officers were injured — one punched in the face and another struck with a glass bottle. Three people of interest have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. A FIFA spokesperson confirmed the bus damage will not impact World Cup transportation to MetLife Stadium.
